Cedar Ridge: The QuintEssential Portside

Cedar Ridge Distillery Logo

Earlier this month, Whiskey Network reported some great news regarding Cedar Ridge Distillery. For review, Jamie Siefken has assumed the role of President and General Manager. Also, Murphy Quint has taken over as second-generation Master Distiller. As noted in our January 2023 cover story, there is quite a bit of magic in the heart of Iowa.

In the lauded line of whiskey from Cedar Ridge, there is one product that continues to occupy our attention: The QuintEssential. On the American Single Malt landscape, this expression casts a long shadow among the many entries. A new edition has joined the family and it’s exceptional beyond expectations.

The QuintEssential Special Release – Portside is handcrafted from 100% two-row pale malted barley. This masterpiece is a fusion of six-year-old American Single Malt first aged in Cedar Ridge ex-bourbon barrels and finished in First-Fill Ruby Port, First-Fill Amontillado Sherry, and Virgin French Oak casks. This impressive resume bodes well, but how did it really turn out?

In a word: exquisite.

For this release in particular, I wanted to do something with a lot of Port influence. I like to produce big, bold, meaty single malts, so I decided to utilize First-Fill Ruby Port casks in order to capture maximum Port flavor. To round it out, I married it with single malt finished in a First-Fill Amontillado Sherry Butt and one Virgin French Oak cask. The end result is definitely Port-dominated, but it has a nice twist to it due to the Sherry and French Oak influence.

Cedar Ridge provided Whiskey Network with a promotional sample in exchange for our opinion. The sample was tested in a glencairn after being allowed to rest for a few minutes following the pour.

Appearance: Vibrant copper, orange, and ruby hues. Reminiscent of an unforgettable sunset dripping across the bountiful fields of Iowa.

Nose: An initial kiss of burnt sugar that gives way to a sharp note of ripe red grapes. After a few minutes, a comforting foundation of grain and/or bread emerges.

Palate: With a supple body that flows easily across your taste buds, the seductive spell of ripe red grapes hypnotizes you and beckons you forward. As the liquid continues to work its magic, there are distinct notes of ripe dark berries and chocolate that surge to prominence in the mix. A subtle hint of spice serves as a notable halo.

Finish: Spice and dark berries remain strong in the finish, but there is warm embrace of oak and malt fused together in sublime harmony. The spice halo reverberates like a calm breeze jostles a wide field of grain.

As Murphy Quint assumes the role of Master Distiller, this opening act to the next phase of his leadership validates his focus, skill, and determination. There is a distinguished legacy already in progress with The QuintEssential, and this entry serves as another reason why Cedar Ridge is a distillery to watch. With this special release available in limited quantities, you’d be well served to get your hands on this immediately. Once the word gets out on how extraordinary this is, it won’t last long.
