The Magi Blended Rye

Let me start by saying that I have grown to have a better appreciation of Rye’s over the years. I’m not going to lie. It has taken me a while to appreciate the nuances of the different style Rye’s. However, I do try to be objective in terms of how well the flavors meld together, how the spice/heat affects the experience and whether the profile works for me.

Cat’s Eye Distillery is based in Bettendorf Iowa and has built their brand largely on sourced whiskeys from Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Their labels, Obtainium and Nassif Family Reserve may be familiar to you. These sourced whiskeys are often available in single barrel selections at cask strength proof. WBSE’S Rickhouse has two of these expressions available currently. The Obtainium 26 year Canadian whiskey at 157 proof and the Obtainium 7 year light at 127 proof. I know, there’s nothing light about the proof!

Their newest release is tamed down quite a bit. The Magi Blended Rye Whiskey at 107 proof, is unique in its blend and finish. It is equal parts 6 year old MGP Rye and 21 year old Pallisser Canadian Rye, which is then finished in Port and Sherry casks. This blend of the older Rye with the younger is not a new concept. However the finishing process really got my attention.

OK, enough of the details! Let’s get to the tasting!

The Magi Blended Rye Whiskey

Class: Blended and finished Rye

Price: $109

Notes:

  • Aged 6+26 years and finished in Port and Sherry barrels

  • Distilled in the U.S (MGP) and Canada

  • Mashbill is a blend of 6 year MGP Rye and 26 year Canadian Rye

  • Finished in Port and Sherry barrels

  • Bottled at 53.5% ABV (107 proof)

Nose: 90/100

Rye spice and a hint of clove are immediately apparent. As I swirl, dark cherry and vanilla become more prominent

Palate: 95/100

Very complex! There’s an initial sweetness that evolves into the dark cherry notes. It presents with a thick mouthfeel that morphs into layers of stone fruits and a cinnamon spice.

Finish: 95/100

Very long finish with a nutty characteristic as the Port and Sherry shine through. The interplay of Sherry and Port with the mingling of Rye spice makes this an exceptional whiskey!

Overall: 93/100

Recommendation: Definitely worth buying a bottle.
