Old Forester Celebrates B-F 150th Anniversary

The word “rare” is used quite a bit in whiskey discussions. Here’s a rare case where its use might truly apply: Old Forester yesterday released what it calls “the rarest bottle it has ever produced.”

The 12 ½ -year-old bourbon comes in the 150th Anniversary Brown-Forman Decanter. In 2018, then-Master Distiller Chris Morris chose six barrels that aged for 150 months. (Picking up on the theme yet?)

“Old Forester is the only bourbon to exist before, during, and after Prohibition – and what better way to celebrate that legacy than offering to the public this rare decanter,” said Old Forester Master Taster Melissa Rift.

One hundred fifty bottles will be sold from a group of 500 that was originally created for members of the Brown family, owners of Brown-Forman.

Of course, rarity comes with a price: $2500 per decanter. But it also comes in a unique handmade box made from wood recovered from the 2015 Whiskey Row fire which nearly destroyed the block where the Old Forester Distillery sits.

If you purchase an anniversary decanter, you can only pick it up on December 5, 2023 (Repeal of Prohibition Day) at a special VIP party and tour at the Old Forester Distillery in Louisville.

Look for our upcoming story in Whiskey Network Magazine on the special exhibit on Old Forester’s historic 1950s and 1960s holiday decanters opening soon at the Frazier History Museum in Louisville.
