Green River is one of the hottest names in whiskey right now. Every whiskey conversation I have with friends, someone mentions Green River. Every tasting I attend, someone mentions Green River. The bottle arrived in nice packaging with the distinctive horseshoe shaped bottle and a nice, minimalist but classy label.
The distillery was founded in 1885 by John W. McCulloch who was known as someone with exceptional ability in sales and marketing. He dedicated his time to promoting Green River Whiskey and it grew in stature around the world. Over time, the whiskey had earned many accolades and awards. Against the odds of a devastating fire and Prohibition, the brand faded from existence.
Fast forward to 2014, the distillery was restored and in 2016 they began distilling again. The results speak for themselves as the modern whiskey is capturing the attention of many enthusiasts.
Full disclosure, this sample was sent by the distillery but as always, my reviews are 100% my own with zero influence from the distiller, or anyone else.
Green River Kentucky Straight Rye
Mashbill: 95/5 Rye/Barley
ABV: 95 Proof
Notes: A blend of 4 to 6 year old barrels
Tasted neat in a Neat Elite glass.
Nose – early spring rose buds, fresh oak, and molasses.
Palate – begins with a touch of spicy mint. The spice is much less than I’d expect at 95 proof. It’s very nice. The spice and mint give way to a delicious rich, slightly oaky, maple syrup note that begs you to keep coming back for more. Normally, when I am tasting for an article, I taste immediately after the pour, then wait about 20 minutes and taste again. I had a hard time waiting the 20 minutes with this pour, it was so good!
Finish – fairly short finish with orange peel, oak, and that same molasses note I picked up on the nose but on the finish, the molasses was fairly faint. Great finish, I just wanted more of it.
I am embarrassed to say this, especially with all of the great press Green River has been getting, along with the massive amount of “whiskey talk” surrounding them, but this was my first time trying one of their products. With a price point around $40, this is a definite buy!
Cheers!
