Milam & Greene Whiskey debuted another chapter in its acclaimed Unabridged series this week. Unabridged Volume 3 is a cask-strength blend of straight bourbon whiskeys including Kentucky bourbons ranging from 3.5 to 10-years-old, four-year-old Texas malted-rye bourbon, and some Tennessee bourbon for good measure.
CEO and Master Blender Heather Greene and her team pulled together the best they could find from six unique whiskies in 49 different barrels coming from three different states. The new release is part of the Blender’s Reserve collection.
An unabridged book is one that has not been cut or shortened. This full-strength bourbon is non-chill-filtered and equally “unedited.” The distillery said the Unabridged Series is “a literary–themed blend that pays homage to Greene’s book “Whiskey Distilled’ and showcases her incomparable talents.” Greene was named Master Blender of the Year in 2023 by the Bourbon Women.
I was fortunate to participate in an online tasting session with CEO and Master Blender Heather Greene and about 40 other whiskey writers. The unabashed consensus on Unabridged 3: The Milam & Greene team in Texas has another hit on their hands.
Milam & Greene Unabridged Volume 3
Blend: “A blend of 49 barrels that marries a 10-year-old and 9- year-old Kentucky bourbon for backbone with a 4-year-old Texas malted-rye bourbon for sweetness. Some Tennessee bourbon is added for vanilla and balance.”
Tasting notes (from the distillery): “Mahogany in color, this blend of bourbons has fragrant aromas of caramelized brown sugar and notes of honeysuckle, almond, oak, cigar boxes, and old fine leather. On the palate, Milam & Greene’s Unabridged Volume 3 is smooth yet viscous with notes of sweet cornbread, crème brûlée, vanilla, peanut brittle, and malted milk chocolate. The finish is dangerously smooth with notes of marzipan, baking spice, and simple syrup.”
SRP: $94.99 (750 ml)
ABV: 59%
If you were at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival in Bardstown this past weekend and got a sample: lucky you. If you got a bottle, you’re even luckier. It was the official pre-release event for Unabridged Volume 3 and the bottles sold out.
This premium offering continues a real winning streak for the Blanco, Texas craft distillery. I was at the Women in Whiskey Awards in Louisville last month when M & G Master Distiller Marlene Holmes was honored as the “Master Distiller of the Year” for 2024.
Do yourself a favor and read up on this latest chapter in the Milam & Greene story. There’s no question, it’s going to be a best seller.
“Customers love cask-strength whiskeys. They had been asking us for years to create one, and we answered by creating the Unabridged series. The trick was to do something full of flavor and personality while still retaining elegance. Judging from the reaction at this year’s Kentucky Bourbon Festival, we nailed it once again.”
