As a new contributor to Whiskey Network, I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to my whisky-writing journey than attending the 2024 Fall Gathering, presented by Scotch Whisky USA and the Houston Scotch Whisky Society (HSWS). This incredible event brought whisky lovers together to celebrate the craftsmanship, heritage, and camaraderie that define the world of whisky.
A Warm Welcome into the World of Whisky
From the moment I arrived, I felt the warmth of the HSWS community. One of the society’s founders greeted me with a handshake and genuine hospitality. I was joined by my wife and her sister—both whisky novices—dressed to impress and eager to dive into the evening’s offerings.
The venue buzzed with energy as fellow enthusiasts moved from table to table, exploring an impressive lineup of 65+ whisky brands from around the globe. Laughter, clinking Glencairns, and animated conversations filled the room, setting the stage for an unforgettable night.
Highlights of the Tasting Experience
With such a vast array of whiskies, it was impossible to try everything, but a few remarkable drams stood out:
- Glen Keith 1992, 30-Year-Old (Murray McDavid): A double sherry cask masterpiece that left a lasting impression.
- Kilchoman 16-Year-Old: A peated delight with balanced complexity.
- Edradour 10-Year-Old (2013) Sherry STFC: Rich and indulgent with signature sherry character.
- Linkwood 12-Year-Old PX: Smooth, fruity, and perfectly cask-finished.
- Dailuaine 11-Year-Old (The Single Cask): Selected exclusively by HSWS, this delicate, flavorful gem stole the show for me.
Brand ambassadors were eager to share the stories and production methods behind their whiskies, offering both expert insight and generous pours.
Responsible Enjoyment
HSWS ensured that the evening was as responsible as it was enjoyable. Complimentary bites from Maggiano’s provided a delicious pairing for the drams, and bottled water was readily available. Designated drivers were well accommodated, ensuring everyone could participate safely.
My wife’s sister, a whisky newcomer, ended the night on a high note, winning her favorite bottle: the Balvenie Caribbean Cask.
Final Thoughts
The 2024 Fall Gathering was more than just a whisky tasting—it was a celebration of community, exploration, and shared passion. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or just starting your whisky journey, events like these showcase the magic of the spirit and the people who love it.
I’m honored to have experienced this evening and even more thrilled to share it with the Whiskey Network community.
Review: Dailuaine 11-Year-Old (The Single Cask)
Dailuaine 11-Year-Old (The Single Cask) is an exceptional dram that delivers a harmonious balance of fruit, spice, and depth, showcasing the distillery’s underrated elegance.
Nose: 87/100
The aroma is a delicate interplay of sweet honeysuckle and stone fruits—plums, peaches, and apricots—enveloped by a subtle floral bouquet. There’s a nostalgic quality here, as if walking into an old, used bookstore, adding depth and intrigue.
Palate: 88/100
The stone fruits continue to shine, now joined by dark chocolate for a luscious richness. Bright citrus notes cut through the sweetness, offering balance. As it develops, a soft yet lingering spice, reminiscent of cinnamon, emerges toward the back of the palate, adding a warm complexity.
Finish: 88/100
The finish is both long and powerful, leaving a memorable impression. Dark licorice, dried apricot, and ripe plum create a layered and satisfying conclusion, perfectly tying together the experience.
Overall: 87.6/100
Recommendation:
This Dailuaine is a standout, showcasing the distillery’s ability to produce a whisky that is both approachable and complex. With its thoughtful balance of fruit, chocolate, and spice, it’s a dram worth savoring. Slàinte Mhath!
