The Glendronach: Ode to the Embers – Review

Introducing The Master’s Anthology Series from The Glendronach

The Glendronach Distillery has unveiled The Master’s Anthology, a new trio of non-age-stated single malts crafted to showcase the depth, elegance, and complexity of their famed sherry cask maturation. Now officially launched in the U.S., the series includes: Ode to The Valley, Ode to The Embers, and Ode to The Dark, each a tribute to a different dimension of The Glendronach’s house character.

From fruit-laden port and sherry casks, to peated notes wrapped in Pedro Ximénez sherry warmth, and finally into the rich decadence of layered dark chocolate and dates, these releases reflect nearly two centuries of Highland whisky-making tradition under the careful hand of Master Blender Rachel Barrie.

This tasting series explores each expression in depth, beginning with Ode to The Embers.

Glendronach “Ode To The Embers” – The Master’s Anthology Series

Class: Highland Peated Sherried Single Malt

Notes: NAS and bottled at 48.4% ABV

Color: Deep Amber

Nose: 87/100
A vibrant bouquet opens the experience, featuring fresh strawberries, sun-ripened peaches, blackberries, and rich dates that swirl together with unexpected, but welcome notes of peanut butter and raisins. There’s a hint of smoldering embers like the last coals of a fading wood fire that adds depth and intrigue to the fruit-forward profile.

Palate: 86/100
The arrival is buttery and soft, coating the tongue with a velvety richness. What follows is a warming wave of smoked blackberry cobbler, dark fruits, and a whisper of lemon oil and seaweed peat. It’s reminiscent of Kilchoman Sanaig, though with a gentler touch. The peat here is subtle, more suggestion than assertion, making it a great entry point for drinkers curious about the interplay between sherry and smoke.

Finish: 84/100
Long and comforting. The sherry sweetness lingers with echoes of dark fruit and a faint memory of coastal brine. A touch of lemongrass and that wood-fire peat continue to whisper as it fades.

Conclusion:
“Ode To The Embers” is an approachable, fruit-laced dram with just enough peat to make it interesting without overpowering. While the cask maturation feels on the younger side and perhaps a bit wet, it still delivers a balanced and enjoyable pour. It’s not the boldest Glendronach you’ll find, but it’s a charming and well-composed ode indeed.

Final Verdict:
Smoked blackberry cobbler in a glass. Easy drinking, and an excellent introduction to the world where peat meets sherry.
