I’ll jump right is and say that I’m an Allman Brothers fan!
The Three Chord Bourbon (Whiskey Network Whiskey Maker of the Year 2023) team has produced two Backstage Series bottle in collaboration with the Allman Brothers estate and David Spero, longtime manager of Dickey Betts. The first expression, which is still available, was a huge success. That expression was finished with toasted peach staves and was a big hit with the album cover on the label.
I’m not going to lie, I have long loved everything Three Chord Bourbon has done! However, in my reviews, I do try to be objective in terms of how well the flavors coalesce, how the heat affects the experience, and generally whether the profile just works — and this works amazingly!
This bottle is the second Allman Brothers release from Three Chord Backstage Series and in my humble opinion, one of the best. First, let me say that this is currently available in limited quantities by pre-order only. Shipping should occur the beginning of March. I would be remiss not to mention the magic of Master Blender Ari Sussman. It’s his magic that makes these blends win awards.
When I first popped the cork on this bottle, I was struck immediately with notes of fresh summer peaches. There are three components to this blend. The first is nine-year-old Kentucky bourbon. The second is an 11-year-old Tennessee whiskey from a bourbon mash. Finally, the blend is finished for three-to-six-months in peach brandy casks from George Washington’s distillery at Mount Vernon. Are you excited yet? I was!
As you will see in the tasting notes, the different blends and finish can subtly change the flavor profile.
OK, enough of my geekery. Let’s get to the tasting!
