The Glendronach: Ode to the Dark Review

Introducing The Master’s Anthology Series from The Glendronach

The Glendronach Distillery in Scotland has unveiled The Master’s Anthology, a new trio of non-age-stated single malts crafted to showcase the depth, elegance, and complexity of its famed sherry cask maturation. Now officially launched in the U.S., the series includes: Ode to The Valley, Ode to The Embers, and Ode to The Dark, each a tribute to a different dimension of The Glendronach’s house character.

From fruit-laden port and sherry casks, to peated notes wrapped in Pedro Ximénez sherry warmth, and finally into the rich decadence of layered dark chocolate and dates, these releases reflect nearly two centuries of Highland whisky-making tradition under the careful hand of Master Blender Rachel Barrie.

This tasting series explores each expression in depth, with focus now on Ode to The Dark.

Glendronach “Ode To The Dark” – The Master’s Anthology Series

Class:  Pedro Ximénez Cask Matured

Notes: NAS and bottled at 50.8% ABV

Color: Bronze in the glass, a fitting hue for a whisky meant to evoke richness and indulgence.

Nose
Chocolate-covered cherries lead the way, followed by stewed raisins, dates, and a touch of licorice. A whisper of clove adds an earthy, spicy undertone.
Score: 87/100

Palate
The texture is pleasing, with a cherry syrup richness giving body to warm dates and seasoned oak. There is a noticeable youthfulness, but unlike Ode to the Valley, it doesn’t completely overwhelm the sweeter elements.
Score: 85/100

Finish
A warm trail of pepper, cinnamon, clove, and oak, supported by lingering dark fruits. Again, the youthfulness pokes through, but is better integrated than in the Valley expression.
Score: 84/100

Conclusion

A solid effort that flirts with greatness but falls short due to its lack of age. The Pedro Ximénez casks lend depth and texture, but they don’t fully conceal the young spirit beneath. Of the three releases, Ode to the Embers remains the standout—its gentle peat works harmoniously with wet casks, providing better structure and complexity.

Overall Score: 85/100

"Whisky is liquid sunshine."

George Bernard Shaw

“The light music of whiskey falling into a glass – an agreeable interlude.”
